LLAMA SCHOOL

Our multi-day classes provide an opportunity to work more in depth than is possible in the workshops. They allow us to go out into the backcountry to apply lessons in a real world scenario. We prefer to schedule these events especially for your group. A minimum of four particants and a lead time of four weeks is necessary. Please contact us for particulars.

BASIC LLAMA HANDLING

This class is designed to prepare you and your llama to successfully complete the Pack Llama Trial Association (PLTA) Basic Pack Llama trial as well as teach you the the basics of caring for a llama on a daily basis. It addresses all the handling and obstacle requirements of the PLTA trials as well as addressing grooming and health issues. The 12-hour curriculum is spread over the course of two days to give you a chance to assimilate the information being presented.

ADVANCED LLAMA HANDLING

This class consists of field training designed to prepare you and your llama to successfully earn the Pack Llama Trial Association (PLTA) Advanced Pack Llama certification, as well as teach you the basics of llama packing. The first day will consist of an introduction to equipment and techniques. On the second day we will load our llama companions with tents, gear and food for a hike of up to five miles into a beautiful backcountry location where we will set up an overnight camp. Along the way you will learn how to negotiate the types of obstacles PLTA certified Advanced and Master Pack Llamas are expected to deal with.

BACKCOUNTRY NAVIGATION I: Lostproofing, or 'How to Get Around in the Back of Beyond'

Getting lost is no fun, yet we all do it. It is the degree to which we do it that makes the difference. Being momentarily misplaced in a parking lot has little ramification compared to a lengthy disorientation in the backcountry. In this class you will learn techniques applicable to any environment but truly indispensable in the trail-less expanses of the Great Basin. You will experience the effects of wide-angle vision, silence and expanded awareness on your ability to navigate through an unfamilar landscape.
